Ok - so maybe I am showing my age - but I am a huge fan of Douglas Adams and especially the HHGTG cult !
So when I saw that the HHGTG Radio Show Live was coming to Manchester Opera House I had to go. The stage was set with Live band, Radio Mics, a sound effects desk and a big comfy chair for the 'Voice of the Book' to sit in. Most of the cast were the original cast from the very first Radio show, back in 1978, and I could recognise most of the voices. Even Marvin the Paranoid Android ('Life, don't talk to me about Life').
HHGTG over the years developed a life of its own, and each different media ended up with a different ending, this one was no different. They had to condense several radio series into a 2 act show. I am not so familiar with the original radio show, but the first half would be familiar to most, as both TV series and film stuck to the original start. The second half was more of a mix, but worked really well.
One of my, many, favourite parts of the show is when Slartibartfast reveals that he designed the fiddly coastline of Norway, even won an award for it. How was I to know that many years later I would be regularly visiting the fiddly coastline of Norway. Another proof of the 'the interconnectedness of all things'.
You probably have to be a fan to get the most out of it, and it was certainly a different type of audience than I usually see at the Opera House. The chap in front of me even brought his towel :-) The show is touring, and each venue is recorded and can be downloaded from the website (£9.99) - which is much cheaper than a ticket !
